What Is Liposuction?
Achieving a slender and attractive silhouette is one of the most important considerations for patients wishing to enhance their physique from head to toe. However, many patients find themselves struggling with stubborn localized fat that compromises their body shape. Liposuction, also known as “lipoplasty,” is a surgical procedure that eliminates excess fat from almost any area of the body that is difficult to target with diet and exercise. Dr. Burnett will carefully sculpt a firmer, more toned body that will provide his patients with a natural and balanced physique.
"I first met this doctor after doing my research for breast reconstruction as my implant had leaked. The original doctor who had done the surgery less than 2 years prior was a jerk and stand-offish. I was more than pleased to say the least with my results and aftercare the attentive staff and Doctor provided. I was so impressed I went back to have chin liposuction this year and I am over the moon AND stars with my results. After doing extensive research and in person consultations I must say Dr. Burnett is not the usual insincere and arrogant surgeon. He listened to every concern and addressed each question I had despite the previous number of times I asked the same question. My results are natural and I never once felt pressured or made to feel 10 times more unattractive than when I first walked in as with other doctors. I have referred him to family and friends and he is now my #1 surgeon for any and all future cosmetic surgeries."- S.S. / Yelp / Jan 31, 2021
"tummy tuck, liposuction, vertical clousure - Doctor Burnett excellent surgeon. staff members front office as well as back office nurses very friendly; explain procedure instruction very well before surgery."- Anonymous / Vitals / Jan 23, 2016
"Better than I expected - Dr Burnett was very professional and took a lot of time to find out EXACTLY what I wanted and my expectations. I had liposuction and Abdominoplasty (fixing what 3 C-sections did). I feel better than I ever have before, the staff and Dr said it was worse than they had ever seen, but it turned out better than I ever expected!"- Anonymous / Vitals / Sep 24, 2011
"Good but not great - I had liposuction on my stomach, love handles and back. Although I am happy that I had it, I know if I would have waited or looked up another doctor with more experience, it would have been amazing because I wasnt really fat to begin with. I am happy with the results but he missed a spot, really! Right above my belly button, its not noticable unless I gain weight though and when I pointed it out to him, he said "you didnt expect it to be perfect did you". I didnt but this imperfection isnt due to me having loose skin or being too fat, it was his mistake."- Anonymous / Vitals / Mar 16, 2010
How Is Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction removes fat from the hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck, stomach, or other regions of the body. This is accomplished through small incisions in the target regions, followed by the insertion of a sharp device designed to break apart and loosen fat. After the targeted fat is loosened, Dr. Burnett can remove it through a cannula, or a small suction device. Because weight loss can't determine where your body fat disappears or remains, this is a highly effective way to reduce fat in the event that your genetics or body composition prevents you from having the body shape you desire.
Liposuction is a very versatile procedure that can be used to remove stubborn fat from almost any area of the body. It can be used to treat the following areas:
Benefits of Liposuction
A More Toned Appearance
Liposuction can remove fat from just below the skin to let your muscle tone show through. Your arms and thighs will look leaner, and practically any area of your body will have a stronger, more slender appearance. All the time you put in at the gym to remove those stubborn bulges will finally pay off as your new body conforms to its true shape.
Liposuction is designed to eliminate fat cells from problem areas of the body like the abdomen, back, flanks, buttocks, hips, knees, and ankles. Although this is not a weight loss procedure, liposuction can target stubborn body fat and reduce it to produce a slimmer appearance. Patients who opt for liposuction can enjoy a fitter-looking figure.
Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures because of its versatility. If you are feeling self-conscious, you will feel your confidence soar when you choose to enhance your body with liposuction. You’ll notice that your clothes will fit better, you will have more clothing options, and you will feel great showing off your new figure.
The Liposuction Procedure
Before your liposuction surgery, make sure to stop taking certain medications that may increase the risk of bleeding or poor wound healing, such as aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin). You will also be asked to stop smoking at least two weeks before and after your surgery to reduce the likelihood of complications.
Your consultation plays an essential role in your liposuction process. Dr. Burnett will evaluate the extent of fat accumulation on your body to determine the best treatment plan for you.
- General anesthesia is administered
- Small incisions are made in the area to be treated
- A thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted
- The tube is moved back and forth beneath the skin by hand
- Fat exits the body through the tube via a specialized suctioning device
- The incisions are closed with sutures
Depending on the treatment area, you may be advised to wear a compression garment during recovery, which will minimize pain and swelling. Getting plenty of rest and following postoperative instructions will also help to keep you comfortable. You will be asked to limit all strenuous activity for a few weeks and should be able to return to work one week after your procedure.
Most incisions are placed in easily concealed locations, and any scarring that does occur will fade over time.
The total cost of liposuction depends on the number of areas treated and the amount of fat removed. Dr. Burnett will provide you with a cost sheet during your consultation to determine the best payment option for your procedure.
You may experience some degree of discomfort after your surgery that can be managed with prescribed medications.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Results can I expect from my Liposuction Procedure?

Can Liposuction improve the appearance of Cellulite?
Although liposuction can remove excess fat and usually provides the skin with a smoother appearance, it is not considered a viable treatment for cellulite.
Is Liposuction covered by Health Insurance?
Health insurance providers do not typically cover the cost of liposuction because it is considered a cosmetic procedure.
Is there a Nonsurgical option similar to Liposuction I can choose?
Patients who desire a non-surgical procedure similar to liposuction can opt for CoolSculpting®. CoolSculpting® can safely and effectively freeze unwanted fat cells by delivering controlled cooling to the target area, and it does not require any incisions.
