What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction surgery can be performed to restore the chest to a normal appearance in size and shape following a mastectomy or lumpectomy. It's also used to restore the chest if it has been damaged by a birth defect or trauma. Advanced technologies in reconstructive surgery make it possible for breast cancer patients to feel whole again and have breasts that look natural after experiencing damage or tissue removal. This surgery may involve a few procedures and various stages that may either be performed at the beginning of your cancer treatment or delayed until a later date. For our Fresno, CA patients, Dr. John F. Burnett creates a unique treatment plan with a compassionate approach as we help you and your oncology team to restore your physical appearance and confidence. Reach out to learn more at John F. How Is Breast Reconstruction Performed?

Each breast reconstruction surgery is highly personal and requires a unique consultation with Dr. Burnett to determine the best approach for your body. In general, the procedure will involve removing skin and other tissues from areas, such as the abdomen, back, inner thigh, or from places on a donor's body, and grafting it onto the chest. Other techniques apply a tissue expander under the breast wall and then gradually fill it with a saline solution over the course of 4 – 6 months to stretch the skin naturally. Once the final step has been completed for your breast reconstruction, you should wear a medical support bra and you may be given medication by Dr. Burnett to minimize discomfort, bleeding, and swelling. Ongoing checks with breast exams and mammograms are critical and highly recommended for your ongoing health.
